M. RAJAGOPALA RAO
GGM - Chief Knowledge Officer, ONGC.

A geophysicist by education, an oil explorationist by profession, an IT expert by experience, a Knowledge Manager by assignment, a researcher by interest, a teacher by passion, I look forward to the challenges in harnessing the immense potential of human knowledge capital in an organisation, in the emerging era of global economies.

My most significant contributions have been towards reversal of the down trend in reserve accretion in Eastern Regional Business Centre of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), establishment of a State-of-Art Regional Computer Centre at Jorhat, Assam, India, improving work culture and environment of seismic data acquisition crews, change management during transition of ONGC from a Commission into a Corporation, introduction of Artificial Intelligence technologies and computer aided geo-scientific interpretation systems in ONGC. My latest achievement is the establishment of one of its kind Oil Museum and publication of books on ONGC history in the Golden Jubilee Year. I am fortunate to be given the charge of the largest Corporate Social Responsibility Project of ONGC – ‘ONGC Project Saraswati’ – which has met with success in finding deep ground water resources in Rajasthan. Currently I am pioneering the introduction of Knowledge Management initiatives in ONGC, particularly Virtual Learning systems and Communities of Practice.

In one word my image of self is a ‘TEACHER’. I am innovative, imaginative, knowledge seeking, learning continuously and looking for opportunities to apply my ideas. I am an excellent communicator, extrovert and team builder. I take pride in my VERSATALITY, INTEGRITY, and PROACTIVITY.

I am constantly making efforts to improve in the areas of personal financial management, making my achievements more visible and dealing firmly with opposition.

I seek solace in spiritual pursuits and knowledge of the ultimate. By the grace of the lord and help from regular meditation and worship, my frail body has stood by me excellently, needing no medication whatsoever in the past decade and a half.

I did my schooling and college at Vizianagaram, an important centre of arts and culture (Music, Dance, Poetry, Drama, Painting and folk arts) in Andhra Pradesh and obtained a Bachelors Degree in science.

I did my post graduation in Geophysics from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, one of the oldest and finest universities in southern India.

I have been working for over 32 years in the Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) the premier public sector company involved in exploration and exploitation of Oil & Gas

On survey vessels at Bombay, in the then largest Computer Centre in India, at Dehradun.

As a Staff Officer, assisting the Chairman cum Managing Director of ONGC in the area of ‘Internal Communication’ with our 47,000 employees

As Head of the Geoscience Project providing Geophysical inputs (Acquisition, Processing & interpretation) to exploration in the Eastern Regional Business Centre

As core faculty (Exploration, IT, Decision Making, Stress management, Fifth Generation Time Management) and Head of Research and Development in HRM at the Institute of Management Development, ONGC, Dehradun, pioneering Knowledge Management (KM) in ONGC.

Implementing the Virtual Learning System over the company wide networks

Currently I am the Chief Knowledge Officer of ONGC, steering a major project for company-wide implementation of KM in the company

I have held the positions as the Founder President of the Society of Petroleum Geophysicists, Secretary, President etc., Andhra Samiti, Dehradun , executive member of the ‘Computer Society of India – Dehradun Chapter, Founder President, Jorhat Information Technology Society, Founder President PRAYOJANI (ONGC Employees Consumers Co-operative Society Regd.), ONGC, Cinnamara, Jorhat. Currently I am the President of ‘Devbhoomi Telugu Association’ and ‘South Indian Cultural Society’

I was founder editor GEOHORIZONS – The Technical bulletin of, Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG), ANVI - The House Journal of Association of Scientific & Technical Officers of ONGC, was on the editorial board of HRM – The New Frontiers – The Quarterly Corporate House Journal on Human Resource Management, several souvenirs and news bulletins released in international conferences like PETROTECH, SPG, etc. Published ONGC Golden Jubilee Publications ‘Upstream India – 50 Golden Years of ONGC’, ‘Downstream India – History of Downstream Petroleum Industry’ and ‘India – Way to Big Oil’. Edited Petrotech publication ‘Unfolding Horizons: Hydrocarbon Vision of India’. A ‘Technical Memoir’ and a ‘Coffee Table Book’ on history of ONGC under editing now.
